For this assignment, use Omeka.net to build a collection of primary sources — material from the historical period you are researching — related to the research question you developed in Module 1. Utilize the resources in this module to identify local material and public domain content from larger state and national repositories that are freely available for use or in the public domain:
-
- Select items to add to your Omeka installation. You should aim to add between 10-20 items which include at least two different types of sources
- Keep notes on how these items answer your question or contribute to your narrative.
- Keep notes on what, if any, material you wanted to include, but either could not find, or did not have permission to use. This information will be important when you come to create narratives using your sources, to remind you of the limitations of your sources and any perspectives missing from them
- Describe each item with detailed metadata
-
- Include as much information as possible.
- Be sure to add copyright information and ensure that you have the correct permissions to share images or content.
- Use this Dublin Core Worksheet as a guide when describing your items
-
- As items are added to your collection, you may find that developing a standard format for entering data is appropriate. The formatting of text in metadata fields may vary.
- Remember that item metadata can be edited so as you develop a clear understanding of how information is presented in Omeka it may be helpful to develop a style guide (a brief summary or list of preferred language, punctuation, and text formatting) for use in your project.
