What is digital local history?

This module will introduce learners to digital local history. Learners will learn about the topics and practices of local history, and its relationship to genealogy and academic history. To begin to address the challenges of doing this form of history, they will learn to frame questions that unveil an inclusive picture of the past and to identify the sources that can offer answers to those questions. Finally, the module will introduce learners to the use of computers to present historical sources and narratives, focusing on the software platform that will be used in this course, Omeka. The goal of this course is to help you develop a project that combines a digital collection with a historical narrative.

  • Ability to frame a good question about a local history topic
  • Ability to locate appropriate sources for a local history topic
  • Set up an Omeka.net site
  • Understand how Omeka can be used for a local history project
