There are a variety of sites to help you identify the digital collections in your state, if you do not already know them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.loc.gov\/thesignal\/2013\/09\/71-digital-portals-to-state-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Library of Congress- Portals to State History<\/a>&#8211; includes links to state and regional digital archives. Created in 2013, this list does not include all the state level collections now available.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nhd.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National History Day<\/a> affiliates have <a href=\"https:\/\/nhd.org\/affiliate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">compiled local\/state level information<\/a> on historic sites, libraries and museums<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>State library collections range widely in scale and scope, and are organized and described in a variety of ways, but the general approaches to search outlined for the national repositories will help you identify primary sources relevant to your local history.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Additional resources that may be useful:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chronicling America<\/a> (Library of Congress) a searchable database of U.S. newspapers that provides access to historic newspapers and some digitized newspaper pages.\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.okhistory.org\/research\/forms\/Guide_to_Using_Chronicling_America.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guide to searching Chronicling America<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/edsitement.neh.gov\/what-chronicling-america\/searching-chronicling-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Index and subject lists for Chronicling America<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/collections\/sanborn-maps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sanborn Maps<\/a> (Library of Congress and other state level archives) designed to assist fire insurance agents, these detailed maps include information on the shape and size of cities between 1867 and the present.\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/collections\/sanborn-maps\/articles-and-essays\/introduction-to-the-collection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learn more about the collection via the Library of Congress<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/collections\/sanborn-maps\/about-this-collection\/how-to-view-maps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guide on how to view maps<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/collections\/sanborn-maps\/about-this-collection\/related-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guide on how to locate maps held in other locations<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.familytreemagazine.com\/articles\/genealogy_research_strategies\/libraries-archives\/how-to-use-the-library-of-congress-new-sanborn-maps-for-genealogy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guide on how to use Sanborn Maps for Genealogy<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hathitrust.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hathi Trust Digital Library<\/a> &#8211; a library of digitized texts collected from a variety of sources, including Google, Microsoft, and university libraries. Some of the material is still in copyright and only available to users from specific institutions; most is publically available, and can accessed through full-text search.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/locations#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Regional National Archives Research Centers<\/a> &#8211; locate one near you<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.worldcat.org\/archivegrid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Archive Grid<\/a> (OCLC WorldCat) a searchable database of records describing primary source collections held in archives, libraries, museums and historical societies. The database does contain digitized material, but can be used to help you identify local institutions that hold primary source material that might be relevant to your research.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/teachinghistory.org\/history-content\/national-resource-centers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teaching History &#8211; National Resources<\/a> &#8211; collects links for different national resources for history content (from US Coast Guard and National Institutes of Health, to Federal Highway Administration and the Architect of the Capitol) Each page has some framing text and points visitors to content on the site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Activity 2.1.2: \u00a0Scavenger Hunt<\/h4>\n<p>Apply the lessons learned in this section with a scavenger hunt for digital sources.
