(McNeil, Scisco)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The house was probably built in the 18th century, but was photographed around 1894 (data from Library of Congress) so it stayed there a long time, even with changes in the city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scisco says that Burnes was resistant to the proposal for the city and early on refused to participate. This is confirmed by the primary source letter from Washington to his commissioners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burnes\u2019 daughter married a congressman. They built a house near this cottage and were key members of the Washington social scene in the early 19th century. (Klaus) The photograph doesn\u2019t show the house, so it\u2019s hard to get a sense of just how close together they were.\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Synthesize<\/b><\/td>\n<td><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What conclusions can you draw from the evidence?<\/span><\/i><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Burnes lived on the land which became the National Mall during the eighteenth century and into the early nineteenth. He was one of the landowners who sold property to the government to create Washington, DC, but he was reluctant to do so at first. The area where his house was remained in his family\u2019s possession through his daughter\u2019s inheritance. His house remained standing until the late nineteenth century, which may have been because the land was still in private hands even though all around it there were federal offices and buildings, including the White House. It was not removed to suit any plan of the National Mall during the nineteenth century.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Interpret<\/b><\/td>\n<td><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does the evidence suggest is the answer to your question?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does this contribute to the narrative?<\/span><\/i><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only have people lived on the National Mall, but some of those who did were determined to stay after the Federal City was established. David Burnes\u2019 cottage was a physical reminder of the history of the area before 1790, and a manifestation of the occupant\u2019s reported stubbornness. That it remained on the Mall as long as it did is partly because the Mall in the nineteenth century was not as organized and orderly as it is today.
